Course description

Energy-related issues are assuming growing prominence on international agendas and in the economic, technological, environmental and political fields. The complexity and diversity of energy-associated factors requires a multidimensional and holistic vision for its adequate understanding.

The global climate situation and the environmental policies of the European community in the need for environmental protection and energy transition increasingly enhance the need for training of senior technical staff in this area.

The postgraduate course in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency aims to provide its trainees with the necessary tools to design and calculate mini-installations for the production of energy from renewable sources.

New technologies, business and energy market perspectives, and the European support to the implementation of renewable systems and energy efficiency are also approached and developed in a practical way.

The course is of a fundamentally practical nature, including case studies, system sizing and theoretical foundations.

The postgraduate course in Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency is a wide spectrum training programme with its pivotal and complementary role in economy and environment-related areas.

Aims of the course

Upon completion of the course, postgraduates will be able to:

  • Recognise and assess technological applications for the production, transport, distribution, storage and efficient use of various forms of energy;
  • Apply technical and economic criteria in the selection of appropriate energy solutions for different situations, with a focus on renewable energy sources;
  • Apply acquired knowledge in the scope of the design of installations, definition of technical specifications and dimensioning of energy production and storage systems;
  • Apply acquired knowledge in the scope of the selection and acquisition of energy transformation units equipment and respective use;
  • Understand the functioning of the energy markets.

What makes this course different?

The course values the practical component of its syllabus by carrying out dimensioning studies aimed at a concrete and practical application of acquired knowledges and whenever possible, with a connection to the business reality.

This postgraduate course is taught by highly qualified academic and professional staff, as well as specialists in the different fields of the study plan, mainly from the business context, invited to develop practical work and present an applied perspective of the contents delivered.

Target audience:

  • Holders of a degree in engineering, economics, management, mathematics, physics, science or related areas.
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum which attests to their ability to carry out this cycle of studies (subject to evaluation).

Duration and Credit Units

The course has a duration of one academic year, and awards 36 ECTS.
