Course description

Aims of the course: SPSS is a leading statistical software that helps you quickly and easily find new insights in your data. It provides a range of exploratory statistical analysis, hypothesis testing and reporting capabilities, making it easier to manage data, select and perform analyses, and share the results. At the end of the course, you will have learnt the basics of cleaning and analysing data, using descriptive data techniques complemented by graphical procedures.

Course programme

1 - Introduction to SPSS: variables and cases, types of variables and measurement scales, coding of variables and the codebook, organisation and management of a database, preparation of statistical analyses through recoding and transformation, database quality assessment, missing values;

2 – Descriptive Statistics: univariate table of frequencies, cross-referenced bivariate tables, descriptive measures and graphical exploration methods;

3 – Measuring correlation, regression and association: scatter diagrams, Pearson and Spearman coefficients, simple linear regression models, assessing model quality;

4 – Managing Scripts, writing a report using SPSS.

Speaker/trainer

Amadeu Fernandes holds a PhD in Astrophysics and a Master's degree in Technological Astronomy from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), as well as a first degree in Physics and Applied Mathematics from the University of Porto (Portugal). He is currently an assistant professor at the University Institute of Maia - ISMAI, where he teaches Statistics to students of different bachelor’s and master’s courses integrated in the Department of Business Sciences and the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences. He is also the Director of the Quality Assurance Office and a researcher at the CEDTUR – Centre for Tourism Development Studies.
