Course description
Aims of the course: Good information is essential to make good decisions. However, in an age of information overload, how can we assess the quality and credibility of information and still think straight? And how will machines be able to make decisions for us? This short course will try to shed some light on these subjects by presenting the basics on quality of information and decision-making.
Course programme
1. Decision-making: the basics
- Why are decisions hard? Fundamentals on problem solving. Human and machine decisions.
- Choices: ethics and decisions. Elements of decisions. Uncertainty and risk. Risk attitudes. The value of information.
2. Quality of Information
- The problem of information overload in decision-making
- Information overload and analysis paralysis
- The causes of information overload
- Steps for dealing with information overload
- Evaluating credibility
3.Artificial intelligence and machine decision-making
- Intelligent decision support systems
- Looking for patterns: data mining
- Information and knowledge: the limitations of computers and AI
- Machine decision-making. How to teach computers ethics and other human qualities.
Speaker/trainer
Luís Miguel Proença holds a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Porto. He is Assistant Professor at the University Institute of Maia - ISMAI and at the Polytechnic Institute of Maia - IPMAIA, in Portugal. He is an expert in decision-making systems, risk analysis and machine learning.

After 1 April: 300€
1 May. (Fees include lunch at ISMAI + one convivial dinner + 1 cultural activity)
