​Alberto Alves is currently an Assistant Professor and the Programme Director of the MSc in Exercise and Health at the University Institute of Maia (ISMAI). He holds a first degree in Sports Sciences and Physical Education from the Faculty of Sports of Porto University and an MSc in Cardiac Rehabilitation from the University of Essex (United Kingdom). He also worked as a Clinical Physiologist in the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.


Alberto was awarded with a scholarship in 2007 from the Research Centre in Physical Activity, Health and Leisure (CIAFEL) and obtained his doctoral degree in Physical Activity and Health in 2012 from the Faculty of Sports of Porto University where he studied the effects of genetic variants and exercise training on left ventricular function and exercise tolerance in heart failure patients. During his doctoral studies he also conducted research and laboratorial work at Zinman College for Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the Wingate Institute (Israel), exploring the effects of genomics on human performance.

Research
His current research focuses on understanding the impact of exercise training on vascular function and endothelial repair mechanisms in healthy and patients with chronic diseases (cardiovascular, obesity, diabetes and CKD). He is also focused on the role of technology for monitoring the physiological responses to exercise training programs and the determinants of the interindividual variability in the response to such programmes.
